Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory (KAPL) based in upstate New York, is a world-class research and development facility dedicated to support of the United States Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program.
KAPL is operated for the Department of Energy by Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation. KAPL employees develop advanced nuclear propulsion technology, provide technical support for the safe and reliable operation of existing naval reactors and provide training to naval personnel who operate them.
KAPL employs more than 2,600 people at two major sites, in Niskayuna, NY, a suburb in New York's Capital Region and in West Milton, NY, 19 miles to the northwest. A small contingent of KAPL field personnel also support nuclear work at shipyards in Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Virginia and Washington State.
